Together Against Fraud - Tips for Prevention
As Fraud Prevention Month comes to an end, the Lethbridge Police Service would like to highlight a few key tips.
Watch for Red Flags
Recognizing a scam is the first and most important step. Some typical “red flags that help you detect fraud early:
- The message is unexpected and unsolicited
- You are asked to lie or keep a secret
- There are immediate demands for decisions and payments
- There are requests to use difficult to trace, alternative payment methods (like cryptocurrency or gift cards)
Slow Down – Resist High Pressure Tactics
Scammers will play on your emotions and try to create urgency to force quick decisions.
- Don’t be afraid to say, “No!”
- Take your time
- Do your research
- Request information in writing
- Seek a second opinion before responding
Be Skeptical – Verify Before You Trust
Scammers often impersonate reputable organizations.
- Use an official website or call to confirm details directly. DO NOT use the contact information provided in suspicious messages
- Double check websites urls, email addresses and phone numbers to ensure they aren’t “spoofed” (disguised)
- Hover over links before clicking to check their actual destination
- Never download attachments from unknown senders
Research ANY Investments
Be cautious of promises of guaranteed high returns with little to no risk.
- Only invest with regulated organizations and financial advisors. To check, visit the Canadian Securities Administrators
- Research organizations before donating or investing
Protect Your Information
Legitimate companies will never ask for sensitive data through email or text.
- Never share sensitive personal details (e.g. passwords, Social Insurance Number) unless you are absolutely sure of the recipient’s identity
- Use unique, complex passwords for different accounts. Use a password manager if needed
- Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
- Regularly update your operating system, apps and antivirus software
Stay Educated and Aware
- Tell family, friends, neighbours and co-workers about your experience. You may prevent someone else from becoming a victim
- Regularly educate yourself about new scams using reputable sources like the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre
Remember the 3Rs:
- Recognize: Be aware of common scam tactics and red flags
- Reject: Say “NO” and disengage from further contact. Do no share any information
- Report: If you have NOT suffered a loss, report to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. If you have suffered a loss, report to the Lethbridge Police Service and your financial institution
While frauds and scams come in many forms, most rely on deception, urgency and emotional manipulation. Education is the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones. For the most current information, check with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
