So long summer...hello new school year!

The first day of classes is September 3 and for motorists that means an influx of vehicle and pedestrian traffic around area schools.

Lethbridge Police are reminding motorists to drive cautiously and ensure they obey the rules of the road. Drivers can expect to see enforcement activity around local schools to help drive home the message.

With harmonized playground zones in effect daily from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. all year round, drivers should already be accustomed to slowing down to 30 km/h. In addition to speeding violations, police will be on the look out for other infractions such as distracted driving, failing to yield the right of way to pedestrians, parking violations and illegal U-turns. Motorists are reminded not to park on or obstruct a crosswalk and not to double park or park in alleys. Parents are encouraged to set a good example for their children by crossing the street at corners or in marked crosswalks – not jaywalking.

It's also important to watch out for school buses, especially when children are boarding or disembarking. In the City of Lethbridge there is a bylaw prohibiting school buses from using their stop lights and stop arms, but drivers are still urged to use caution when navigating around buses that are stopped and be mindful this rule may not apply in other jurisdictions, particularly rural communities.

SAFETY TIPS FOR STUDENTS:

  • When exiting a vehicle, ensure you watch out for other vehicles that may be passing by
  • Before entering a roadway, always proceed slowly, while checking all ways for vehicles. Never run into the road
  • Make eye contact with drivers of vehicles approaching an intersection you intend to cross
  • Cross at the corner or in marked crosswalks and activate pedestrian crossing lights where possible

TIPS FOR DRIVERS:

  • Pay attention to not only what is in front of you, but also obstacles along the side of the road that may obstruct your view of a child who may suddenly appear in your traffic lane
  • Leave sufficient space when travelling behind other vehicles to allow you time to react to traffic stopping suddenly
  • Pay attention to the roadway and do not manipulate or look at your cell phone or other electronic devices while driving
  • Use caution when approaching intersections or mid-block crosswalks and yield to all pedestrians
  • Be very cautious in parking lots or when backing out of a parking stall or driveway
  • Don’t consume alcohol or drugs then drive
  • Obey all speed limits inclusive of playground zones
  • Do not double park or park in alleys
  • Do no park on or obstruct crosswalks

TIPS FOR CYCLISTS:

  • Do not ride on the sidewalk unless it’s a designated multi-use pathway
  • Dismount your bicycle before crossing a crosswalk – if you ride through, you are not a pedestrian
  • Be aware of other pedestrians and motorists
  • Always wear a helmet (it’s the law for anyone under 18) and if you are riding at night ensure proper use of reflectors, lights and reflective clothing
