Share the Roads Safely with Big Trucks

June is Commercial Vehicle month and police are reminding all drivers to do their part to share the road safely.
Alberta collisions statistics show in 2021 truck tractors made up two per cent of the total vehicles involved in casualty collisions and 10 per cent of the vehicles in fatal crashes. Vehicle factors were also more likely to be present in truck tractor collisions than in others.
Drivers of regular vehicles need to be aware that commercial vehicles have large blind spots, require a wider turning radius and take longer to stop than smaller vehicles. Always be sure to give commercial vehicles enough room on the road, don’t follow too closely and stay out of blind spots.
Drivers of commercial vehicles should always pull over when tired, leave enough space between vehicles to compensate for the additional stop time they require, adjust mirrors and know your blind spots, signal well in advance when planning to turn or change lanes, complete proper trip inspections, check load securement and always ensure your vehicle is properly maintained.
