Police reminding vehicle enthusiasts to celebrate Street Machine Weekend safely

Lethbridge Police are reminding participants in the annual Street Machine Weekend that all the rules of the road will apply and motorists are expected to obey them.

Street Machine Weekend runs July 12-14 with events scheduled at the Lethbridge and District Exhibition and Galt Gardens. A significant increase in traffic volumes is anticipated and additional LPS resources, along with officers from partner agencies, will be deployed to provide a visible police presence and conduct enforcement to ensure public safety.

While most participants are respectful of other motorists and pedestrians during this long-standing community event, over the years there have been a number of incidents where large crowds have gathered on public and private property and drivers have engaged in illegal and dangerous driving behaviour. In previous years, Mayor Magrath Drive and 3 Avenue South have also been hot spots for stunting, speeding and other traffic violations.

In 2023, police issued 130 violation tickets, mostly for stunting and equipment violations. There were also three Immediate Roadside Sanction Fails, two IRS zero tolerance for GDL drivers, one IRS Caution, one 24-hour suspension, six vehicles towed and one warrant executed.

Police are asking all participants to celebrate Street Machine Weekend responsibly and help keep everyone on the road and spectators on the sidelines safe.
