Lethbridge Police Pipe Band ready to take the stage
The Lethbridge Police Service is proud to announce the formation of a pipe band.
On January 20, a Memorandum of Understanding between LPS and two community pipe bands – The Legion Pipe Band and the Bridge City Highlanders Pipes and Drums – was officially signed, amalgamating the two groups and marking the creation of the new Lethbridge Police Service Pipe Band.
“This is an historic moment for our police service and we are thrilled to introduce our new pipe band,” said Chief Shahin Mehdizadeh. “Pipe bands have long been a part of military regiments and it’s a deep-rooted tradition we’re excited share with the community.”
Reflective of the Service’s commitment to community engagement, the newly formed pipe band will serve as a ceremonial unit, performing at both internal and external events. The band is comprised of approximately two dozen police and civilian volunteers to promote and grow the traditions of Scottish music and the rich history of military and law enforcement pipe bands.
“Our two pipe bands are excited to join together under the umbrella of the Lethbridge Police Service,” said Scott Sinclair, interim Pipe Major of the LPS Pipe Band. “The opportunity to represent the Police Service and the City of Lethbridge seems a perfect fit to further our objectives of promoting and growing the traditions of Scottish music within southern Alberta. We look forward to the new opportunities presented through the creation of this band, and meeting people within the community in our new role as ambassadors of the LPS.”
Band members will wear the Prince Charles Edward Stuart tartan, a vibrant blend of red and dark green and complimented by yellow, blue and white stripes. The colours symbolize strength, resilience and a connection to the land. The new uniforms are currently in production and in the meantime, band members will wear some parts of their previous ceremonial kit for community performances.
The first official performance of the Lethbridge Police Pipe Band is scheduled for February 1 at the Bringing Hearts Home Gala, a fundraising event in support of the Southern Alberta Cardiac Centre of Excellence.
