Education the focus of pedestrian safety traffic enforcement project
Lethbridge Police have wrapped up a month-long pedestrian safety traffic enforcement project that saw officers engage with nearly 300 parents and students, issue 16 tickets, and deliver numerous warnings.
Launched in response to growing concerns about pedestrian safety near local schools and playgrounds, the initiative ran throughout March. Lethbridge Police and Community Peace Officers partnered with Alberta Sheriffs to address key traffic safety issues including inattention, speeding, illegal U-turns, crosswalk obstructions, and vehicles parked too close to intersections.
“We attended nearly every school in Lethbridge during high-traffic times before and after classes,” said Sergeant Danny Lomness of the Lethbridge Police Traffic Response Unit. “This allowed us to speak directly with students and parents, educating them about the importance of safe habits—things like keeping hoodies down, removing headphones, staying off mobile devices, and making sure to be seen and acknowledged by motorists. With so much activity around schools, it’s critical that everyone stays alert and follows the rules of the road.”
Though the formal enforcement campaign has come to a completion, officers will continue to monitor school zones and high-traffic areas. The public is encouraged to remain mindful of pedestrian safety by obeying traffic laws, eliminating distractions, and always using designated crosswalks.
