Ctrl + Alt + Deceit – Tech Support Scammers take over more than just your keyboard
It’s the final week of Fraud Prevention Month and we’re focusing on Tech Support Scams, where victims are led to believe a virus has infected their computer, usually in one of the following two ways:
- An alarming website pop-up that demands a phone number be called immediately
- An unsolicited telephone call – often from someone claiming to be from “Microsoft” or another well-known computer company
Once on the phone, the scammer tries to access the victim’s computer to run programs or alter settings in order to install malware or steal personal and financial information. They will then likely ask for payment through credit card, money transfer, or by “helping” the victim log into their bank account to transfer funds.
Recognize
Be immediately suspicious when:
- The message is unsolicited and unexpected - often coming from someone claiming to be from a legitimate technology company
- You see a website pop-up message or email that claims your device is compromised
- You are told that the issue is urgent and are being forced to act quickly
- Someone wants to access your computer remotely
- You are being asked to provide personal or financial information – either verbally on the phone or by typing data on the computer
Reject
Remember, it’s ok to say “NO” and hang up. To further protect yourself:
- Slow down and verify information by using official websites and phone numbers (DO NOT use the contact information provided by the potential scammer)
- Never grant remote access to your computer unless you initiated the contact and are 100% sure they are legitimate
- Use strong passwords and multi-factor authentication on all your accounts
- Keep your computer software and security tools updated
