The APREP
The Alberta Physical Readiness Evaluation for Police (APREP) is not a test of police procedures, but rather an assessment of the physical abilities of policing applicants.
The APREP simulates the physical demands that may be experienced in a critical incident; where a police officer chases, apprehends and controls a subject. While aerobic fitness is certainly essential during a critical incident, overall fitness is also essential to enhancing an officer's ability to respond when needed, reducing their likelihood of personal injury and increasing both officer and public safety.
Knowing the APREP inside and out can be beneficial for prospective applicants. The following video provides a step-by-step walkthrough of what can be expected during the APREP.
About the APREP
The APREP is separated into two parts: the Pursuit-Restraint Circuit and the Leger 20m Shuttle Run.
Pursuit-Restraint Circuit
The following tasks are performed as a continuous circuit while wearing a 7.5kg weighted belt around the waist (the weight of a standard police issued duty belt).
- Running 100m while scaling four sets of stairs and two 1.52m high fences
- Performing a simulation of the control of an offender by pushing, pulling and maneuvering a 34kg apparatus
- Simulating the restraint of a resistant offender by pulling two weighted "arms" together
- Dragging a 68kg mannequin a distance of 15m
The Pursuit-Restraint Circuit must be completed in under 2 minutes and 10 seconds to pass.
Leger 20m Shuttle Run
Applicants must run a 20m course, end-line to end-line, between audio signals. As time progresses, the time between audio signals will decrease, forcing applicants to speed up in order to keep pace.
Failure to reach an end-line before the next audio trigger twice in a row will end an applicant's test.
Applicants must reach level 7 to pass.
