The APREP
The Alberta Physical Readiness Evaluation for Police (APREP) is not a test of police procedures, but rather an assessment of the physical abilities of policing applicants.
The APREP simulates the physical demands that may be experienced in a critical incident; where a police officer chases, apprehends and controls a subject. While aerobic fitness is certainly essential during critical incidents, overall fitness is also important to enhance an officer's ability to respond when needed, reduce the likelihood of personal injury and increase both officer and public safety.
Knowing the APREP inside and out can be beneficial for prospective applicants. The following video provides a step-by-step walkthrough of what can be expected:
About the APREP
The APREP is separated into two parts:
Pursuit-Restraint Circuit
The following tasks are performed as a continuous circuit while wearing a 7.5 kg weighted belt around the waist (the weight of a standard police issued duty belt).
- Running 100m while scaling four sets of stairs and two 1.52 m high fences
- Performing a simulation of the control of an offender by pushing, pulling and maneuvering a 34 kg apparatus
- Simulating the restraint of a resistant offender by pulling two weighted "arms" together
- Dragging a 68 kg mannequin a distance of 15 m
The Pursuit-Restraint Circuit must be completed in under 2 minutes and 10 seconds to pass.
Leger 20m Shuttle Run
Applicants must run a 20 m course, end-line to end-line, between audio signals. As time progresses, the time between audio signals will decrease, forcing applicants to speed up in order to keep pace.
Failure to reach an end-line before the next audio trigger twice in a row will end an applicant's test.
Applicants must reach level 7 to pass.
