Record Suspension (Pardon)

A record suspension (previously known as a "pardon") allows people who were convicted of a criminal offence, but have completed their sentence and demonstrated that they are law-abiding citizens for a prescribed number of years, to have their criminal record kept separate and apart from other criminal records.

The Parole Board of Canada is the official and only federal agency responsible for ordering, refusing to order and revoking record suspensions for convictions under federal acts or regulations of Canada.

Requesting a Local Police Record Check

If you are applying for a record suspension from the Parole Board of Canada, you will need to obtain a Local Police Record Check from every police jurisdiction where you have resided for the last five years.

Applying for a Local Police Record Check

Fill out the Local Police Information Check Application Form found on the Parole Board of Canada's website
Arrange for a copy of your RCMP Certified Criminal Record
Arrange for proof of identification by showing or photocopying two (2) valid pieces of government-issued identification. One (1) of those pieces of identification must include a photo
- Examples of photo identification (this list is not exhaustive):
  - Driver’s Licence or Identification Card
  - Passport
  - Nexus Card
  - Permanent Residence Card
  - Indian/Metis Status Card
- Examples of non-photo identification (this list is not exhaustive):
  - Provincial Healthcare Card
  - Birth Certificate
  - SIN Card
  - WIN Card
  - Boating License
  - Immigration Papers

Submit the completed package using one (1) of the following options:
- Attend the front desk of the Lethbridge Police Service (135 – 1 Avenue South, Lethbridge, Alberta) during business hours (Monday to Friday 7:30 am to 4:00 pm. Closed weekends and statutory holidays)
- Mail the package to:
  Access and Privacy Unit
  Lethbridge Police Service
  135 - 1 Avenue South
  Lethbridge, AB T1J 0A1
Requests are processed once forms and supporting documentation are received in good order and applicable fees are paid-in-full

Fee Information

Local Police Record Check Request - $55 per file

Costs are listed in Canadian dollars and include taxes and processing fees, when charged.

Accepted Forms of Payment

Requests made in-person:
- Cash or debit
Requests made via mail:
- Certified cheques or money orders made payable to the "The City of Lethbridge."

Please note that personal cheques CANNOT be accepted.

Processing Times

Local Police Record Checks requests are processed in order of the date they are received in good order. To avoid delays, please ensure all required identification and documentation is included.

Standard processing of Local Police Record Checks is approximately 90 full business days (Monday through Friday, not including weekends or holidays) and is subject to change at any time without notice, pending the volume of requests received.

Upon completion, the Local Police Record Check will be sent by mail. Mailing time with Canada Post is approximately 3 to 5 business days.
